At ZyGEM we have developed an extraction method that is optimized and tested on 21 different brands of cigarette butts. The biological residue that remains on a cigarette is saliva, however inhibitors present in the cigarette butts can present problems for some extraction methods, as can the relatively low levels of biological material. The high specific activity and the gentle lysis of the ZyGEM technology overcomes these problems and typically yields sufficient DNA for between 10 and 100 downstream PCRs or profiling reactions.
