ZyGEM Enzyme
Bloodstain
DNA from bloodstains can often be problematic to extract

SAMPLE TYPE: BLOODSTAIN

Bloodstains are common crime scene samples but can often be problematic for DNA extraction because of the substance on which the stain is presented. The tannins in plant material, the indigo from denim and colored dyes can effect the sample by acting as powerful inhibitors of Taq DNA polymerase.

In addition, the sheer volume of bloodstain samples found at the scene of a violent crime can make extracting DNA cost prohibitive. If even a single spot from a perpetrator is lost among many spots from the victim, a conviction may be jeopardized.

forensicGEM™ Bloodstain, currently under development, is ideal for many types of bloodstain and has been tested for a wide range of stains on cotton, blue and black denim, colored wool, glass, formica, wood and leaf litter. The gentle nature of the extraction minimizes the release of inhibitors into the extractive, and the simplicity of the method keeps yields high - which is important for degraded or small samples. Furthermore, like all forensicGEM™ products, forensicGEM™ Bloodstain's low cost, one-step extraction system can be automated to process large volume crime samples.
