Waterborne illness remains a major public health problem in most of the world, including countries with well developed water treatment and distribution systems. Nucleic acid-based detection of viruses, parasites and bacteria is faster, more sensitive and more specific than most methods typically used for environmental water monitoring. But DNA-based analysis of possible contaminants is possible only if DNA can be reliably extracted from the sample. ZyGEM’s core DNA extraction technology is an ideal solution for this application—it is low-cost, robust and can be easily incorporated into kits for most nucleic acid-based tests for waterborne organisms.
