The company also is fortunate to have the ongoing counsel of internationally renowned scientist Sir Brian Heap who serves in the role of Chief Scientific Advisor.

The company is privately funded. Cornerstone investors include Endeavour Capital, Waikato Link and a founding group of ZyGEM scientists.

Paul Kinnon
President and Chief Executive Officer

Paul Kinnon, CEOPaul Kinnon was appointed President and CEO in October 2007. A life science industry veteran, he brings ZyGEM more than 18 years of management experience in developing and marketing innovative products and solutions to diverse customers. Paul joined ZyGEM from Invitrogen Corp., where he held the positions of Vice President of Global Strategic Alliances and Vice President and General Manager of the Applied Markets Business Unit. Previously, he was Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Guava Technologies and Vice President of Sales at Cellomics. Earlier in his career, he held marketing and management positions at leading companies including Porvair, Caliper, Whatman and Thermo Instrumentation. Paul was awarded a Bachelor of Applied Chemistry from Coventry University in the UK and a Diploma of Marketing from Chartered Institute Of Marketing He is a member of the Chartered Institute Marketing and Association of Strategic Alliance Professionals (ASAP). Paul is based at ZyGEM’s U.S. headquarters near San Diego, California.

James P. Landers
CSO, ZyGEM-MicroLab

Professor of Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering and Pathology, University of Virginia

James P. Landers, CSOJames Landers is Professor of Chemistry, Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Virginia, and an Associate Professor of Pathology at the University of Virginia Health System.  He co-founded MicroLab Diagnostics in 2003 where he has served as a CSO ever since.  MicroLab entered into partnership with Lockheed Martin in 2008 in a project focused on delivering a microfluidic DNA analysis platform for forensic analysis.  In 2010, MicroLab merged with ZyGEM Corp. to leverage the powerful suite of reagents they had developed and build on the companies synergies around nucleic acid extraction and detection.

James received his Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry with a minor in Biomedicine at the University of Guelph (pronounced Gwelf) in Ontario (Canada) in 1984.  He earned his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the same department in 1988.  After a one-year post-doctoral fellowship at the Banting Institute at the University of Toronto’s School of Medicine, he was awarded a Canadian Medical Research Council (MRC) Fellowship to study cancer biology and diagnostics under Dr. Thomas Spelsberg, a breast cancer biochemist at the Mayo Clinic.  He launched and directed the Clinical Capillary Electrophoresis Facility in the Department of Lab Medicine and Pathology at Mayo developing clinical assays using capillary electrophoretic technology.

Research efforts have focused on generating rapid prototypes microdevices for separations, DNA purification and DNA amplification, as well as devices that fluidically-integrate on-chip sample preparation with analysis.  In addition to editing three editions of the Handbook of Capillary Electrophoresis, he has authored more than 175 peer-reviewed papers and 25 book chapters ranging from receptor biochemistry and capillary electrophoretic method development, to microchip fabrication and integrated microfluidic systems for application in the clinical and forensic arenas.

Gary Levine
CFO

Gary Levine is the Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer of ZyGEM.  Previously, Mr. Levine was Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer of Bostwick Laboratories, a pre-IPO cancer testing laboratory based in Richmond, Virginia.  In his role, he was responsible for setting and driving business strategy, as well as directing all aspects of the company’s financial infrastructure, including analysis, planning, reporting, risk management, revenue growth and compliance to company policies and procedures.  During his tenure he prepared the company for an IPO, partnered with sales to increase revenue from $85M to $150M and increased profit margins from 8% to 15%.

Prior to joining Bostwick Laboratories.he served as a senior financial executive with Nabisco, Pfizer and Medco Health Solutions, the nations largest Pharmaceutical Benefit manager.  While at Medco Gary was responsible for managing revenue, operating and capital budgets.  Additionally Mr. Levine served as Business Development Manager for Medco’s Electronic Prescribing initiative and worked with the federal government’s Human and Health Services Task Force for Health Information Technology to develop national standards for electronic prescribing.

Mr. Levine started his career with Price Waterhouse Coopers, a “Big 4” public accounting firm.   He is a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University with a bachelor's degree in accounting and an MBA.  He is a Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Management Accountant.
